I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect when my friend approached me with the idea of an ‘alternative’ afternoon tea. Hopefully not too off-the-wall that the all-important Scone with Clotted Cream had been taken off the menu! Rest assured, it is still there. I think I’m making a habit of going out for tasty afternoon teas on Sunday now, and long may it continue if they are all of the same standard as The Wild Boar.
Stepping inside venue, we were met with the classic ‘pub’ frontage. The cherry on top was the huge boar’s head slapped on the wall to my left. Each and every member of staff we spoke with knew their stuff and was very accommodating. More tea? No problem! Does the brownie contain nuts? Here’s your answer approximately 20 seconds later. It was a ‘no’ if anyone is interested.
It’s said that The Wild Boar takes its name from the tale of Sir Robert de Gilpin, a man who took it upon himself to vanquish a ferocious boar that terrified locals and pilgrims alike in the Crook/Cleabarrow area. According to the story, travellers visiting the area would pray before passing through the boar’s hunting grounds and even the native Cumbrians were terrified of it. Robert, being the good egg that he is, fought the animal to rid them of their fear and slew it on the spot where inn stands today. In return, he became Baron of Kendal, and many hundreds of years later we got a top-notch inn.
It’s no surprise, given this story, that meat takes precedence on this menu. In comparison with the Luxury Afternoon Tea at The Daffodil, The Wild Boar offers far more in the way of savoury options, and I back that 100%. As I mentioned in my last review, there is such a thing as too much sugar. On the flip side of that, you can never have too much meat. It’s delicious. Even more so when it’s chipolata sausages wrapped in bacon that has the perfect amount of smokiness. Nothing beats their handmade Scotch Egg either. If you appreciate a slightly runny yolk to your egg, this is the snack for you.
This isn’t to say that there’s nothing by way of sweets. Each afternoon tea is served with a chunk of a delightfully gooey chocolate brownie, and a finger of The Wild Boar’s own gingerbread. My word, it nearly blew my head off! It is made with three types of ginger and really packs a punch. If I’m brutally honest, the downside was the scone. We were served a fruit scone each with jam and cream (no butter) which was slightly overcooked, quite dry and dense. I wanted to love it, I really did; but it left me a little disappointed.
Overall though, the value and tastiness of the vast majority of this ‘alternative’ afternoon tea is well worth the £24.00 I paid for it – and that included a boozy beverage too! Quite often this is added on at extra cost, but nothing is too much it seems for The Wild Boar. By the end of my visit, I found myself wanting to return to have a taste of the ‘Grill & Smokehouse Menu’. One day, one day…
